Can You Scrap an Unregistered Car in Victoria?
Yes. An unregistered or expired-rego car can still be sold for scrap in Victoria. Because it generally cannot be driven on public roads, the buyer collects it, usually on a tilt-tray or tow truck.
Registration does not stop you scrapping a car
A scrap car is valued on its metal and any usable parts, not on its registration. At MIS Auto Traders we accept old cars that are unregistered or have expired rego, and pickup is free.
How an unregistered car gets moved
You do not need to arrange a tow. We use tilt-tray trucks and winches to load cars that cannot be driven, even from tight garages or carports. See our non-running car removal service for how that works.
What you still need
- Photo ID
- Proof you own the car, such as registration papers, purchase records or a bill of sale
- The keys, if you have them (a missing key does not rule a car out)
- Personal belongings and toll tags removed from the car
- Number plates removed where required
What to do after the car leaves
Notify VicRoads that you have disposed of the car, so fines and tolls do not follow it. Check the VicRoads website for the current process, and read our step-by-step guide to selling a scrap car in Victoria.
